Off-grid energy systems/
Examples

2. Examples for the application of rural power supply systems

Telecommunication

To supply mobile telecommunication services to rural areas, a reliable electric power source is required. Wind-solar-diesel-hybrid systems often provide the most cost effective solution. The electricity will be used to run the antennas as well as air conditioning systems for cooling of electronic devices.

Lodges / guesthouses / hotels

In upper class lodges, hotels and guesthouses, visitors expect continuous and reliable AC electricity supply. While diesel generators are well suited for short term high power supply, wind-solar-diesel hybrid systems perform better in conditions where long term constant power supply is required. Furthermore, noise from diesel generators can be reduced significantly with wind-solar-diesel hybrid systems.

Village power supply

1.6 billion people are still waiting for access to modern electricity. In many cases, the absolute magnitude of tariffs for electricity are of minor importance. The very low energy demand in the initial phase of electrification and the rapid increase of the load factor after a while are more problematic. Modular wind-solar-diesel-hybrid systems "grow" according to rising demand and this way serve as the backbone of the village electricity island network.
